Integrated Municipal Information System (IMIS)
The Integrated Municipal Information System (IMIS) is a comprehensive web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) that enhances municipal sanitation management and accountability in Bangladesh. Initially implemented by Dhaka WASA, IMIS integrates critical sanitation data to manage desludging requests, transport logistics, treatment quality monitoring at faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs), sanitation worker safety, urban-rural sanitation convergence, and revenue tracking.
Built on user-friendly open-source technologies (PostgreSQL, GeoServer), IMIS requires minimal GIS expertise, facilitating broad adoption across municipal and national levels. Already successfully expanding to cities like Gazipur—with World Bank-supported data integration covering approximately 150,000 buildings—IMIS supports better decision-making, investment planning, environmental compliance, and interoperability among stakeholders. Download this learning material to explore how IMIS strengthens municipal sanitation management, enhances data reliability, and advances effective performance management aligned with broader Smart City initiatives and global sustainable development goals.
